SMART4ENV 2nd Summer School Kicks Off

Date

The SMART4ENV 2nd Summer School has officially begun at the University of Vic (UVIC)! Day 1 proved to be a dynamic and informative experience for the diverse group of participants, encompassing undergraduate, Master’s, and PhD students, industry professionals, and farmers.

A Day Dedicated to Soil Health and Sustainable Practices

The morning session commenced with a captivating presentation by Laia Llenas, representing BETA Technological Center (BETA TC). Laia provided a comprehensive overview of BETA’s mission and its unwavering commitment to fostering a more sustainable future for agriculture.

Following this introduction, the program delved into the critical topic of soil health. Experts from BETA TC led insightful discussions on:

  • Nutrient management: Participants explored techniques for soil rejuvenation, regenerative agriculture practices, and improved management of carbon stocks, all crucial for maintaining healthy and productive soil.
  • Nutrient recovery: This session tackled the challenges of soil degradation and quality losses. Experts discussed methods for recovering nutrients, such as composting and manure management, to promote soil health and reduce reliance on synthetic fertilizers.
  • Regenerative agriculture: A highlight of the day, this session focused on the power of regenerative practices for carbon sequestration. Participants learned how minimizing tillage, implementing cover cropping, and optimizing grazing can enhance soil health, improve farm resilience, and contribute to climate change mitigation efforts.

Beyond the Classroom: A Visit to BETA TC

Day 1 wasn’t confined to lectures and discussions. Participants embarked on an amazing activity – a study visit to BETA TC! This immersive experience provided a firsthand look at the cutting-edge research facilities and technologies employed by BETA in their pursuit of sustainable agricultural solutions. Interacting with researchers and witnessing the practical applications of the concepts explored throughout the day undoubtedly served as a valuable complement to the theoretical knowledge gained.

Looking Ahead to Day 2

The SMART4ENV Summer School promises even more exciting exploration in the coming days. Stay tuned for updates on Day 2, where we’ll delve into sustainable practices, water management strategies, and nature-based solutions for a climate-resilient agricultural future!
