SMART4ENV Systematic Review Published in IWA Journal of Water & Climate Change

Date

We are proud to announce that our systematic review, developed in collaboration with SMART4ENV partners, has been published in the prestigious IWA Journal of Water & Climate Change. 🎉

This comprehensive review examines the digitalization of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) over the past 33 years, providing a valuable contribution to research and practice in the field of smart environmental solutions.

🔍 Key highlights of the review:

  • Classification of AI Models: We propose a new classification approach to better understand and categorize AI models applied in WWTPs.
  • AI Applications for Extreme Rainfall Events: The study reviews existing applications of artificial intelligence aimed at improving WWTP performance in response to challenges posed by extreme rainfall events.
  • Hybrid Approaches: The findings emphasize the importance of developing hybrid solutions that combine AI techniques with knowledge-based models, enhancing predictive accuracy and resilience.
  • Future Directions: We recommend that AI research for WWTPs integrates hydrological forecasting, enabling more precise flow rate estimations and supporting smarter, more effective management practices.

This publication reflects the mission of SMART4ENV to advance digital transformation and climate adaptation in environmental management. It also showcases the strength of collaboration between our partners in tackling pressing challenges for sustainable water management.
